This is the most frequently repeated question in WhatsApp groups and Mexican communities in the U.S.: "which consulate do I have to go to?" And it makes sense, because Mexico has more than 50 consulates spread across the entire country, and the closest one isn't always the one assigned to you.
The short answer: it depends on the county where you live, not the city or the state. Each consulate is assigned a district that includes certain counties, and that determines which one you belong to. Below you'll find the complete breakdown.

Do I have to go to the consulate for my district no matter what?
This is a very legitimate question, especially if you live far from your consulate or if the one next door has more availability. The answer depends on the procedure:
🛂 Passport
In general, you can get it at any consulate, not just the one for your area. You need to present proof of a U.S. address. Some consulates accept it from any state, others require it to be from their district. Call ahead to confirm.
🪪 Consular ID
For this procedure it is important to go to the consulate that covers your county, since you need to prove residence in the district with proof of address from that area.
📄 Civil Registry (certificates)
For birth, marriage and death certificates, you are normally assigned to the consulate for your area. Although in practice many consulates serve any Mexican, it is better to confirm beforehand.
🚨 Emergency / Consular Protection
In urgent cases (detention, accident, death), any Mexican consulate will assist you, regardless of whether you are in its district or not. Don't waste time looking for "yours".
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is the consular district?
It is the territory assigned to each consulate: the set of counties or states it covers. It's like a "coverage zone". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) divides the entire territory of the United States among the more than 50 Mexican consulates so that no Mexican is left without coverage.
I moved to a different city, do I have to update my consulate?
There is no "registration" of a consulate as such. Simply, when you go to do a procedure, you go to the consulate that covers your new address. For the consular ID it is especially important to bring proof of your new address so it is issued at the correct consulate.
How do I confirm 100% which one is my consulate?
The most reliable way is to call MEXITEL at 1-877-639-4835 (toll-free) and state your county of residence. You can also check the "district" (circunscripción) section on the website of the consulate you think covers you: all consulates publish this information on consulmex.sre.gob.mx.
